At Tampa Prep we want students to seek out great “ah-ha” moments. Figure things out. Make discoveries. Go exploring. Share interests with peers. It is through these “ah-ha” moments that leaders find their footing and step forward, initiating student-led clubs and special interest groups.
Our downtown location is ideal for community partnerships, and affords students the opportunity to gain real life experience in their areas of interest. For instance, our Medical Explorers Club has partnered with Tampa General Hospital to gain full-day immersion ER training.

Tampa Preparatory School is proud to induct students into several national and international Honor Societies each year.
Cum Laude Society
This prestigious, international honor society was founded in 1906 to promote learning and scholarship in secondary schools. Juniors and seniors are selected by a faculty committee on the basis of each student’s grade point average. Not more than 10% of the junior class may be inducted into Cum Laude; not more than 20% of the senior class may be inducted as members.
French Honor Society
The French Honor Society was founded by the American Association of Teachers of French in 1949 to recognize academic excellence. Students who are enrolled in a Level 3, 4 or AP French class are eligible for membership at the discretion of their French teacher.
Mu Alpha Theta
Mu Alpha Theta is the national high school mathematics honor society. Full membership is open to students who have completed Algebra 2 and who continue to enroll in more advanced mathematics courses.
National Art Honor Society
In 1978, the National Art Education Association (NAEA) created the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) program, designed specifically for inspiring and recognizing those high school students who have shown outstanding ability in fine/visual arts and demonstrated the highest qualities in art scholarship, service and character.
National Junior Honor Society
NJHS recognizes students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. To be eligible, students must be in 7th or 8th grade, have attended Tampa Prep for at least two semesters, and attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
National Latin Honor Society
Students who complete Latin II, III or an AP level Latin class with an A- average or better are enrolled in the National Latin Honor Society sponsored by the American Classical League the following fall. Membership is annual and must be earned each year.
Quill and Scroll
Quill and Scroll is an international honor society that encourages and recognizes individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. To be eligible, juniors and seniors must be in the upper third of their class in general scholastic standing, must have done superior work in some phase of journalism or school publications work, must be recommended by that publication’s faculty advisor, and must be approved by Quill and Scroll’s executive director.
Spanish Honor Society
The Spanish Honor Society was founded in 1953 by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese to recognize high achievement of high school students in Spanish and to promote the continuing interest in Hispanic studies.
TRI-M National Music Honor Society
TRI-M is under the supervision of The National Association for Music Education. The purpose of this organization is to inspire music participation, create enthusiasm for scholarship, stimulate a desire to render service, and promote leadership in music students of secondary schools.
The stated mission of the Tampa Preparatory Student Council is to, “improve the quality of student life and to represent the school in the greater community.” The focus of Tampa Prep’s Student Council is to be the link between the students, faculty, administration, and alumni of Tampa Prep. Council members request that Upper School students share their concerns and suggestions and, as a group, they discuss ideas about how to best serve their fellow students, solve issues and improve the community for all.
Student Council established a “Student Activities Fund,” which is financed through a portion of ticket sales for the Homecoming Dance. Students and/or groups applying for underwriting of specific events, workshops or philanthropic efforts within the community may apply for assistance from the Students Activities Fund.
Student Council-Sponsored Activities
Student Council organizes many activities in the Tampa Prep Community each year such as:
- Spirit Week
- Pep Rallies
- Red Shell: Student Council funds and supports the spirit club, Red Shell. Red Shell formed with the goal of improving attendance at sporting events and promoting school spirit.
- Black Box Unplugged. This event showcases theatrical and musical talents from the Tampa Prep community held with little amplification (thus, unplugged) in the Smith Black Box Theater.
- Rock the Lot. A Tampa Prep tradition, this concert of student bands is held in the senior parking lot just before seniors leave campus for their three-week internships.
- Student Council members also volunteer their assistance at Parents’ Night, Headmasters’ Challenge and End-of-the-Year Book Return.

Tampa Prep’s Downtown Partnerships
MEDICAL EXPLORERS CLUB - TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL
Students from our Medical Explorer’s Club get to immerse themselves in the fast-paced world of medical professionals during a Day of Learning at Tampa General Hospital. Students spent the day guided through a mock emergency, traveling to different areas of the hospital to help take care of their fictional patient, Curtis. They started with TGH’s Aeromed Flight Crew arriving on the scene of the accident.
Throughout the day, students:
- scrubbed in to see an emergency operating room
- visited the intensive care unit
- practiced CPR compressions
- completed drug calculations
- learned how to draw blood
- learned how to put an IV into a patient
- properly administer medications through an IV drip.
After taking care of Curtis, students complete the Stop the Bleed, Bleeding Control Basic v. 1.0 certification course. They learn how to properly control bleeding as a bystander before a professional arrives.
These students also get to attend workshops related to the medical field and listen to guest speakers who regularly visit from TGH.
THE BECK GROUP
Tampa Prep alumna Joanna (Wickner) Arfsten ’06 is the Senior Marketing Coordinator at The Beck Group, a local architecture, design and construction firm. Joanna invited students interested in design, construction and engineering for a tour of The Beck Group offices near Armature Works, literally just steps away from Tampa Prep along the Hillsborough River.
Students got a tour of Beck’s studios, a presentation on their design-build process including their integration of virtual reality, and had the unique opportunity to talk with Beck’s design principal and director of preconstruction.
With a Florida headquarters established in Tampa over 30 years ago, The Beck Group delivers projects and renowned buildings that touch every aspect of life in Tampa Bay such as:
- Tampa: Ulele restaurant, the Sykes Building downtown, USF Health’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation
- St. Petersburg: The Dali Museum
Teen Court is a sanctioning program of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit’s Juvenile Diversion Program and provides meaningful and constructive alternatives to the formal prosecution of young offenders who have accepted responsibility for their offense(s). This diversion program provides specific and immediate sanctions and services to youth. Teen Court is the only juvenile proceeding where criminal cases are considered by teens and the offender’s sanctions are decided by a Teen Court jury.
Teen Court utilizes the positive impact of peer pressure. The defendants are provided resources for individual and family services and do not have the stigma of an “official” court record. Members of Teen Court are made up of student volunteers who participate in the roles of the jury, defense and prosecution attorneys. Pro bono attorneys participate at the Teen Court judge and also assist in training the attorneys.
Students comport themselves with the appropriate empathy, dignity and expertise that is called for in each circumstance. Their verdicts must represent a fair assessment of the situation so that everyone–including the defendants and their parents–leave the county courthouse satisfied that justice had been served.
