The Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) is proud to announce that Joe Fenlon of Tampa Preparatory School has been selected as Florida’s Boys honoree for the 2026 John R. Wooden Legacy Award, presented by the National High School Basketball Coaches Association in partnership with the Wooden family.

The John R. Wooden Legacy Award recognizes one boys coach and one girls coach from each state who exemplify excellence on the court, in the classroom, and in the community, while embodying the character and leadership synonymous with Coach John Wooden.

Coach Joe Fenlon stands among the most accomplished and respected high school basketball coaches in Florida history. With 43 years of coaching experience and 901 career victories, his career reflects extraordinary longevity, sustained excellence, and an unwavering commitment to developing young men through the game of basketball.

Throughout his distinguished career, Coach Fenlon has guided his teams to 19 district championships, highlighted by an exceptional run of 11 consecutive district titles—an achievement that exemplifies consistency, competitive dominance, and elite program leadership. His teams reached the pinnacle of success with a Florida State Championship in 2012, firmly establishing his legacy as a championship coach on the state’s biggest stage.

Coach Fenlon’s contributions to the sport have been widely recognized at both the state and national levels. He was inducted into the FHSAA Hall of Fame in 2019 and named to the prestigious Florida Association of Basketball Coaches (FABC) Court of Legends in 2016. Nationally, he earned recognition as the 2014 USA Today National High School Basketball Coach of the Year Runner-Up and was a finalist for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Basketball Coach of the Year in 2017.

Beyond team success, Coach Fenlon has had a profound impact on individual player development. He has coached two NCAA National Champions, developed a McDonald’s All-American, and helped more than 45 student-athletes advance to play collegiate basketball, underscoring his ability to prepare players for success at the highest levels of competition.

Coach Fenlon’s influence at Tampa Preparatory School is so significant that, in 2010, the school honored him by naming the basketball court in his honor—an uncommon distinction that reflects his lasting impact on the program and broader school community. In addition to serving as Head Coach, he holds the leadership roles of Associate Head of School and Head of Middle School, further demonstrating the trust placed in his vision, leadership, and character.

A tireless advocate for the game, Coach Fenlon was instrumental in founding the Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association and has served as its President. The association remains a vital resource for coaches and players throughout the region. He has hosted the Tampa High School Summer League, the City All-Star Game, and the Tampa vs. Pinellas All-Star Game, all of which annually honor the Bay Area’s top senior players. He is also a respected clinician, regularly presenting at summer camps and coaching clinics both locally and statewide. Beyond athletics, Coach Fenlon currently serves as President of The Learning Center Board, supporting the education and development of children from infancy through elementary school.

While his résumé is defined by wins, championships, and accolades, Coach Fenlon is equally recognized for his emphasis on character, discipline, and accountability. His coaching philosophy prioritizes leadership development and life preparation, ensuring student-athletes are equipped for success well beyond the basketball court.

For more than four decades, Joe Fenlon has done far more than coach basketball. He has built championship programs, shaped generations of leaders, and set a standard of excellence that defines what it means to be a coach, educator, and mentor at Tampa Preparatory School and across Florida.

The Florida Association of Basketball Coaches congratulates Coach Fenlon on this well-deserved honor and proudly recognizes him as Florida’s 2026 John R. Wooden Legacy Award recipient for Boys Basketball.
