Amelie is a world-class musician who has played the violin since the age of nine. She is a member of the Tampa Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, part of a pre-college young artists music program and has performed for professional violinists in 14 masterclasses. To quote an 80s song, her “future’s so bright, she’s gotta wear shades.”
Favorite subject? “I enjoy all of them but my two favorites are probably Latin and Band. Latin is really interesting because of the history involved. I took Prima Lingua with Mr. Seary in 6th grade and just found it really interesting, so I wanted to continue.”
Other interests? “I mainly like violin and it does take up the majority of my time. I started studying the violin when I was nine years old and I practice 2 – 3 hours every day, plus I try to perform as much as possible. I’m also a Girl Scout and I do a lot of volunteer work.”
Favorite teacher? “I like all of my teachers. Mr. Seary makes class really fun – he plays a lot of games to help us learn. And, Ms. Calandra helps me with a lot of my competitions. I did a state competition recently and she really helped me with that.”
Awards/accomplishments/recognitions? “I prepared for five months to perform in the MTNA (Music Teacher’s National Association) competition and am currently preparing for FSTMA (Florida State Music Teacher’s Association) concerto competition. I also recently recorded two pieces to audition for a few highly competitive camps. I was accepted into the Florida All-State Middle School Orchestra and was one of 18 first violins in the state, out of 36 total.”
Something you’re proud of? “I’m proud of my accomplishments playing the violin. I’ve been able to take violin lessons wherever my family travels in the summer, including the Academia de Música de Lisboa in Lisbon, with Dr. Mary-Elizabeth Brown in Montreal, at the Institut Suzuki Montréal, and while in Morocco, online with Elizabeth Faidley & Amy Beth Horman’s Violin Intensive and AVIVA Young Artists Summer Intensive. I also regularly perform on stage with the local National Federation of Music Clubs.”
Future aspirations? “I’m interested in being a professional violinist and teacher with a studio, possibly music therapy, connecting the world through music for every person.”
Favorite thing about Tampa Prep? “I love that Tampa Prep has a really good community. I feel safe here because they make it very clear that they don’t accept rudeness or hatefulness at this school.”
